USA Government Announces First Ever FDA Gluten-Free Standard

Recently the Food and Drug Administration set the standard for gluten-free labeling on food products. This is the first governmental definition of gluten-free products. A product must not exceed 20 parts per million of gluten to be labeled glutton free in the USA. 

Gluten is mixture of proteins and starch that naturally form in grains like wheat and barley. Gluten levels in products are important when dealing with individuals who have celiac disease. Celiac disease is a reaction in the small intestine, which damages the lining. Other people can have gluten intolerance and not have celiac disease.

The vast majority of gluten intolerance and celiac disease groups have supported and approved of the FDA standard of 20 parts per million. Some individuals have voiced their concerns sighting noticeable sensitivities to 20 parts per million, but feel a reasonable compromise has been reached.  

Congress originally passed a law in 2004 calling on the FDA to protect individuals with celiac disease. There is a significant gap in time between 2004 and 2013 for a gluten-free labeling standard to appear on the market. Overall this new standard will be a success for gluten intolerance and celiac disease individuals. This new standard will not affect gluten-free beer because most gluten-free beers are well under the new standard.

Currently, the Charter oak Brewing Company does not market a gluten-free beer.
