Our Story
Charter Oak Brewing Company (COBC) is a small batch craft brewery located in Historic Danbury, CT that prides itself on using only the finest, premium ingredients. We brew only 250-280 cases at a time to ensure you enjoy only the freshest beer. Our styles range from our flagship 1687 Brown Ale, Wadsworth India Pale Ale, Stubborn Yankee Lager, and Royal Charter Pale Ale as well as our newest Little Charter Session IPA to a wide variety of rotating special releases such as Sours, New England IPAs, Lagers, Stouts, and barrel Aged . We often have a cask available, the way beer was brewed 100 years ago! Visit us and grab a pint at our taproom where we are pouring our beers on 10 constantly rotating draft beer lines or pick up some newly released cans or a growler or a keg. In 2011, P. Scott Vallely, an entrepreneur that had operated several businesses for over 30 years, decided to sell his paper company and focus on creating and growing a micro-craft brewery around the Southwestern Connecticut area and market innovative beers for northeast beer drinkers. Vallely has always had a passion for and commitment to brewing only the most flavorful beer from all-natural ingredients. He later attended and successfully completed the Intensive Brewing Science and Engineering curriculum at American Brewer’s Guild School.
A response to a recent interview sums up his position “I am excited to finally follow my dreams!” He has been an avid home brewer for almost forty years and has been brewing all the styles that Charter Oak will brew and market. The Charter Oak brewery introduced its first style on June 18th, 2012.
Kevin Rand joined the Charter Oak team as their brewer. His passion for beer started when he volunteered at a brewery, which led to home brewing and enrolling in beer-focused education courses. He started his career in beer as a beer buyer for a package store before getting into the production side at various craft breweries, including two in Connecticut: Steady Habit Brewing and Outer Light Brewing. Kevin describes his style of brewing: “experimentation with respect for the tradition”.
Charter Oak Brewing Company LLC (COBC) was among the first of the recent wave of craft beer breweries representing the Connecticut landscape. The brewery features hand-crafted innovative beers such as easy drinking Pale Ales, hop forward IPAs (India Pale Ales), flavorful Brown Ales and the brewery also markets limited release more robust beers offered at our taproom only. Charter Oak is constantly introducing new styles to join our expanding family of beers and are marketed throughout Connecticut , Massachusetts and soon New York.
The Charter Oak Brewing Company opened our Taproom in historic Danbury, Connecticut with 10 rotating draft lines. The beers are constantly changing and there’s always a style on draft that will please YOU! Come visit our 10,000 square foot state of the art operation, grab a pint, try a flight or fill a growler. We also offer very informative tours.
We are marketing six year-round flagship brands: Wadsworth India Pale Ale, Royal Charter Pale Ale, 1687 Brown Ale, Stubborn Yankee Lager, and our newest Little Charter Session IPA as well as more complex and robust seasonal brews in 16oz – 4packs. Charter Oak recently introduced the Legendary Series (flavorful, well balanced), Charter Series (more robust, highly hopped, high ABV) and Oak Series (sours and aged). These series are constantly rotating and are beers that are very limited and likely ‘one and done’. All our hand-crafted beers will only use the freshest barley, choice hops, and will be brewed with only the purest of water.
